County Commissioner Challenge

Posted by Martin Wynn

Our County Commissioner visited Greenfields Rainbows, Brownies and Rangers in Shrewsbury Division to meet our volunteers and young members. During the evening everyone had fun taking part in games, creating leaf pictures and making butterfly tables. One of our young members was presented with the county recognition award for her amazing efforts fundraising for Hope House. 5 new Brownies also made their Promise for the first time. And of course…everyone received their challenge badge!

The County Commissioner Team would like to visit every unit in the county by the end of 2022 and take part in your activities. Would your unit like to take part in the County Commissioner Challenge?

Shropshire Way

Posted by Martin Wynn

A guided Shropshire Way walk was held on the afternoon of Sunday 27th June led by Jo Revell the Walking Adviser. Six members of Shropshire Guiding enjoyed their walk along the stretch of the Shropshire Way between Much Wenlock and Coalbrookdale a distance of a bit over 10km.  The route goes across farmland  then down Benthall Edge through the woods then up through the back lanes of Ironbridge and through woodland again in Coalbrookdale.    We met up with the enthusiastic Lawley Brownies in Ironbridge and, after being fortified by excellent ice creams, we all completed the route together. The last couple of miles wasn’t far but was quite challenging with some steep uphill sections and 174 steps down from the Rotunda view point above Ironbridge. Well – one of the Brownies counted the steps and they certainly felt like 174!  Everyone thoroughly deserved their Shropshire Way challenge badges at the end of the walk. For several of the Brownies this was the first badge they’d gained which was most exciting for them.  Well done all.

So far Shropshire Guiding members have walked 380 miles along the Shropshire Way since Thinking Day 2020. The challenge runs until Thinking Day 2021. If you’d like help to take your unit out to do this challenge contact Jo Revell, details here

Midsummer Magic

Posted by Martin Wynn

Girlguiding Shropshire launched its 2021 Midsummer Magic event which ran over the weekend 5th-6th June. This Sleep/Campover at home was a magical weekend of fun and the girls enjoyed some new activities, had a go at our Scavenger Hunt, made a den and put up their tents and had fun!

On Saturday, they learn’t how to make a fairy garden or mini camp and get crafty with Ice hangings and Twig angels, made some S’mores before they joined author and storyteller Sarah Griffiths for a Girlguiding Shropshire premier of her new story ‘When the Fireflies came’. Then they settled down for our campfire and sing along in the comfort of their own home.

On Sunday they learn’t how to make eggy bread or vegan French toast before they joined our live STEM Challenge at 10.00 am with Leanne and Lois from The STEM Workshop, plus many more fun things.

Whether you are a current member of Girlguiding or you would like to find out what we have to offer, join us on our Facebook page to find out more!

Go Global

Posted by Martin Wynn

On 18th March almost a hundred 10-18 year old members from across Girlguiding Shropshire took part in the virtual international themed event ‘Go Global’. As with almost all aspects of life over the last twelve months, international experiences have had to change as a result of the pandemic. No travel for the last year, but, that doesn’t mean no international fun! We ‘set off’ virtually on our adventures to all corners of the globe….

As everyone was joining we saw where members from Shropshire have travelled abroad with Girlguiding before with a fantastic display of photographs and videos. We then learnt interesting facts about Girl Scout cookies and played ‘Cookie Face’ which bought a lot of laughter to start the evening with a bonus snack for extra energy.

To make some of the activities easier for everyone we then split into breakout rooms and played a variety of games which could be shared with Guides from all over the world. Most importantly we had ‘packed’ a bag although some things may not have been as useful as we had hoped. Thankfully, we were able to see what we might actually need and the importance of these things. Everyone needs to be kept entertained whilst travelling as there are often many hours on planes, cars, boats or buses so we also made an origami cup and ball set to keep us busy. We learnt how to carry water bottles on our heads and practiced walking around the room – an activity people in Rwanda were proud to teach me during an excursion on my GOLD project. Finally we spent a relaxing five minutes learning some yoga to do whilst on the long journey – luckily it was only sitting down!

In the later session we had great fun trying some towel folding to make our travels all the more luxurious. We even managed to make an elephant… although some practice is still needed to perfect them!

Travelling abroad with Girlguiding is one of the most exciting adventures you can have. As you may have seen, members from Shropshire have made it to every WAGGGS Region in recent years and the options really are endless. Have a look on our social media for more stories about international travel following our takeover in February.

Please contact me for any further information – hopefully we will be able to jet off somewhere amazing soon! Katherine Leeming – Shropshire County International Adviser

Severn Gorge Rangers

Posted by Martin Wynn

Severn Gorge Rangers have had their first meeting since lock down. They tackled a section of the Shropshire Way from Ironbridge up through Coalbrookdale and gained their Shrosphire Way Challenge badges. All socially distanced of course! It was a dull evening but very humid. An encounter with some skittish cattle made the return route quite memorable!  Everyone really appreciated being able to meet up in person again. Next up is an evening of campfire cooking.
