Zoe’s Gold D of E

Posted by

On Wednesday 24th May Zoe Jacobs, leader at Randlay Rainbows went to Buckingham Palace to receive her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.
To achieve the award Zoe had to do among many things a years volunteering. She decided to ask the local guiding units if she could do this with them. The Randlay Rainbow unit were more than happy to have her come along as a volunteer. Pam who runs the Randlay Brownies and also was Zoe’s Brown Owl while she was at Brownies organized it for her. Zoe enjoyed the group so much that at the end of her year decided to stay on and do her leadership training. On achieving this, the position of Rainbow leader became available and she was delighted to take over the group where she has seen girls start at 5 and worked with them as they move on to Brownies. She runs a successful unit , which is full with 15 girls and a waiting list.

New things are happening. Girlguiding have a programme renewal in the works, and as part of that are encouraging people to suggest ideas for new badges. Girls, leaders, parents and the general public are being offered the chance to have their ideas turned into a future guiding interest badge, and that’s where you come in.

The new Girlguiding badges and activities will be developed around six themes:
Skills For My Future
Have Adventures
Be Well
Know Myself
Express Myself and
Take Action
and these themes will be used to equip girls with skills and knowledge which they can use in the future.

Suggestions so far have included App Design, Entrepreneurship, Human Rights, Explorer, Space, Upclycling and Vlogging.

What would you like to see a badge in? Head over to our Facebook page and add your suggestions with the hashtag #BadgeGoals – we’d love to hear from you.

1st Lilleshall Guide Unit took part at Easter in Stations of the Cross at Lilleshall Church.

The guides received great feedback and their station was even used within the church sermon.

Can you guess their Bible passage?

Holiday Brownies

The Easter break gave us the perfect opportunity to run our Holiday Brownies scheme once again. This is where girls who are aged 7-9, but aren’t currently in a Brownie unit get the chance to experience the brownie programme. Four girls (including one returning brownie from the last Holiday Brownies) spent several days at Attingham Park undertaking a variety of activities including Easter-themed crafts, den building and treasure hunts across the grounds, as well as learning about the Brownie promise and law.

If you know someone who would like to become a holiday brownie, look out for details of how to sign up for our summer holiday scheme.

Admaston Brownies Mother’s Day

Posted by

Girls from Admaston Brownies recently spent one of their meetings hosting a Mother’s Day event. The girls were able to invite a female family member (mums, Nans, aunts etc) to come to the meeting and be spoilt by their child. The girls had spent time beforehand making handmade cards, a promise table place name for their guests (The place mat had on one side the name of the guest and on the other the girls had written “I promise to…” and filled it in with something they were promising to do), a little gift parcel with a poem, and a small bunch of flowers. The Brownies also gave their guests a slice of cake and served them a hot drink (being very careful with the hot water!).
Lots of very proud ladies at the end of the evening. At the same time, the Brownies completed their Hostess badge, which was presented along that evening with the other badges they’d achieved throughout the course of the term.

Whitchurch 10K

A team of girls and leaders from Shropshire North Division partnered with Macmillan to support the marshalling of the Whitchurch 10K on Sunday 9th April 2017. Positioned around the course, we cheered on the runners and assisted them with queries and directions as part of our partnership with Macmillan this year. We had a stall in the school grounds and even managed to recruit a leader!

Don’t forget the Macmillan Challenge from Girlguiding Midlands…how will your unit take part?
